Well into our second decade as a nonprofit, the SHCS mission remains vibrant: We teach, perform, and celebrate choral music for all ages in our community, contributing to artistic and cultural education through multiple classes, concerts, competitions, and special events.
The St Helena Choral Society formed in 2007 in support of our two earliest choirs ~ the venerable Chamber Singers (together since 1979) and the beloved Children's Choir. The Teen Choir formed in 2008 by popular demand as the children wished to build on their experience and continue harmonizing together. Read more about our choral programs, below.
From its beginnings singing Handel's Messiah in 1979, the Chamber Singers are a 70-voice adult chorus, directed by Craig Bond, presents major choral works with orchestral accompaniment This audition choir is a joyful family of singers with diverse backgrounds who currently (at least pre-Covid) produce two concerts each year - and is famed locally for its annual Christmas performances!
Craig Bond and Melissa Bond teach choral principles and direct this choir for children ages 8 to 12. The children perform two to three concerts a year, participate in competitions, and occasional special events...such as singing the National Anthem to open San Francisco Giants games! Tuition varies per semester and scholarships are available.
Craig Bond and Melissa Bond teach choral principles and direct this choir which showcases local teenagers who perform twice a year, often in conjunction with the St. Helena Children's Chorus. Some students graduate with TEN YEARS of musical fun with Mr Bond's choirs! And yes, they get to sing at the Giants games, too!
Craig Bond pursues his love of vocal jazz harmonies directing this small, invitation-only group, which has become well-known in the Napa Valley. The ensemble, most of whom are 'home-grown' St Helenans, perform three to five concerts each year, as well as smaller shows at local wineries.
The Choral Society has partnered for several years with the Fabulous House Jacks, an astonishingly talented a cappella group, and the St Helena High School Choir for a two-day singing workshop that culminates in a sizzling performance from both students and the Jacks! Most years, Jazz@7 Vocal Ensemble and another local a cappella group, Vocal Color, join in the fun!
The hard work, the performances—and the fun—of our award-winning choral programs, wake up the brilliance in each student, in each audience listener, as only music can.
Our Napa Valley town is so fortunate to have this great tradition of choral music, which has built steadily over four decades under the dedicated direction of Craig Bond—and with your generous support.
Craig Bond and generations of his former and current students helped lead the campaign to raise funds to build both a Performing Arts Classroom (in use from 2013 with the help of a gift from vintner and music-lover Leslie Rudd) and the wonderful Performing Arts Center. With a big community drive and bond approval, this long-awaited, state of the art, acoustically-engineered $14.5 million hall opened in the fall of 2016. The St Helena Chamber Singers, fresh from performing in Carnegie Hall, inaugurated their new home singing Handel's Messiah in full, with their long-time family of orchestral musicians and professional soloists, performing two sold-out concerts to kick off our new era!
